Distribution & Logistics Industry
Southeast Georgia has a huge advantage when it comes to transportation and logistics. All the major modes of transportation are available in Glynn County, including two Class I rail providers, the Port of Brunswick, Interstate access, and air service provided by Delta that offers three daily 37 minute flights to Atlanta.
Port of Brunswick’s Amazing Growth
The Port of Brunswick, which is composed of Colonel’s Island Terminal and Mayor’s Point Terminal, has been hugely successful because of the direct access to rail and interstate 95. Colonel’s Island handles automobiles and also agro-bulk. Mayor’s Point Terminal handles break bulk that consist largely of wood pellets.
Currently, the Port of Brunswick is the Number 1 port of new auto imports and second busiest for overall ro/ro cargo. Colonel’s Island has just over 500 acres that are leased or owned by the automobile industry and there’s nearly 800 acres available for expansion. The Georgia Ports Authority owns both the Port of Brunswick and the Port of Savannah and has played a major role in the port’s success. The Georgia Ports Authority recognizes that Colonel’s Island has a competitive advantage for the automobile industry and they’ve decided to focus their efforts on that industry sector.
News from the Georgia Ports Authority
At the annual State of the Port address hosted by the Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce Thursday, Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Griff Lynch said the GPA increased auto processing capacity at Colonel's Island Terminal by 50 percent over the past 12 months, all of which has been absorbed by processors and manufacturers.
