The president of Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. lauded the Glynn County Airport Commission and local Development Authority for their help in the company’s decision to expand its facility in the Golden Isles.

A leading manufacturer of technologically advanced business-jet aircraft, Gulfstream announced in January plans to spend $25 million to expand its hangar at Brunswick Golden Isles Airport and add a minimum of 100 more employees to its staff of 200 at the facility. The new building will be about 110,000 square feet – 73,000 for hangar space and the rest for offices, back shops and parts storage.

The company’s headquarters and main facility are in Savannah, where it employs more than 9,000.

aviation“On the Brunswick expansion project, I want to offer a special thanks to the Brunswick and Glynn County Development Authority and the Glynn County Airport Commission,” said Larry Flynn, president of Gulfstream, which was named Georgia Manufacturer of the Year Thursday.

“I can tell you this project would not have been possible without the hard work and perseverance of both the Development Authority and the Airport Commission. Glynn County residents should be proud to have these two outstanding organizations.”

The company was still beaming Friday over the state recognition in the category of companies with 500 or more employees.

The award was announced by Gov. Nathan Deal during the 20th annual Governor’s Awards luncheon in Atlanta.

Deal said Gulfstream and other manufacturers are an essential part of Georgia.

“Manufacturing represents a powerful piece of the Georgia mosaic, supplying our state with jobs and the world with goods,” said Deal during his keynote speech when presenting the award.

The company received the award for its “commitment to employees, the community and the environment and its emphasis on education,” according to remarks read when the award was announced.

Locally, Gulfstream was nominated for the award by the Brunswick and Glynn County Development Authority, the Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce and Altamaha Technical College.

The airport commission worked closely with Gulfstream as well.

The Brunswick Commission and the Glynn County Commission passed proclamations designating the week as Manufacturer’s Appreciation Week.
