Glynn County has a long history of service to the aviation community, dating from the opening of its first airport on St. Simons Island in 1938. The U.S. Navy occupied and operated both county airport facilities in WorldWar II, and left the valuable gift of an 8,000+ runway in Brunswick, rendering the facility capable of handling virtually any aircraft operational today.
McKinnon St. Simons Island Airport offers crucial mid-island access for general aviation
services, offering a full service FBO and Rental vehicle availabiltiy. Jekyll Island Airport
supplies general aviation access as well. Brunswick Golden Isles Airport offers full
general aviation services as well as scheduled passenger jet service from Delta Airlines.
A new $11 million passenger terminal complted in 2005, extends a gracious welcome in
a style reflecting teh area's major resort destinations. Ideally located at Brunswick
Golden Isles Airport are 2,000 shovel-ready acres of prime development property.
These sites, offered by the Glynn County Airport Commission, are runway accessible
and ideal for aviation/aerospace industries. Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. and

County at facilities adjacent to the terminal area.
Distribution and Logistics
Brunswick and the Golden Isles of Georgia has historically taken full advantage of a strategic location on the Atlantic coast, 75 miles south of Savannah, Georgia and 65 miles north of Jacksonville, Florida. The Port of Brunswick has participated in global commerce for centuries, welcoming vessels ranging from 4-masted schooners to massive modern cargo ships. A determined group of civic leaders brought railroad service to Brunswick in 1856, a progressive decision for its time that continues to provide significant benefits for business and industry. Glynn County’s early investments in the fledgling air service business in the 1930s initiated an enduring commitment to all levels of the aviation/aerospace industry today.
Intersected by one of the nation’s major East Coast arteries, I-95, and
accessed by a growing list of expanded and improving highways, Brunswick and
the Golden Isles of Georgia is truly on the move in all areas.
Incentives
A number of value-oriented incentives are available in Brunswick and the Golden
Isles. A voter-approved Free Port Tax Exemption allows companies that send
goods out of state a 100% inventory tax exemption. Brunswick’s Foreign Trade
Zone, FTZ #144 (one of only 3 in Georgia), offers specific financial benefits to
business and industry. Imported materials stored in warehouses pay no duty
while they are stored within the designated Trade Zone. Certain types of
merchandise can be imported into a Zone without going through formal Customs
entry procedures or paying import duties. Customs duties and excise taxes are
due only at the time of transfer from the FTZ for U.S. consumption. Foreign Trade
Zone facilities are located in two areas in Glynn County, at the Colonel’s Island
terminal and at Coastal Logistics Park at Tradewinds.
Manufacturing Services
Since Colonial times, manufacturing has been an economic mainstay in Brunswick and the Golden Isles. As our nation grew, a thriving local economy emerged, based on the bounty of coastal forests, seafood and the maritime trades. From that solid foundation came the enduring legacy of the forest products industry, from pulp and paper manufacture to building products. Capitalizing on its vital Atlantic Seaboard location, Glynn County has assumed a position of leadership worldwide in the seafood processing field. The community’s seafaring legacy remains strong as it enters its fourth century.
Today, a new generation of manufacturing firms has joined the Glynn County
business community, creating new products that use the most current technology
on the market. Newest among the products manufactured in Brunswick and the
Golden Isles are aviation equipment, high performance pumps, heat exchange
tubing, and flame retardant foam materials. Service to the maritime industry
continues with the fabrication of sophisticated shipboard equipment for military
naval systems.
Resources
A decidedly pro-manufacturing mindset has led Glynn County, Georgia to make
significant investments in infrastructure, and to create a plentiful inventory of
excellent properties, ranging in size from 2-500 acres. Many offer rail service on
site and enjoy favorable proximity to air transport, major highways and the
amenities of the Port of Brunswick. The community’s current workforce includes
local residents and commuter employees from five surrounding counties and is
expected to benefit from the current trend of coastal growth. Brunswick and the
Golden Isles has also committed to the future of a trained workforce through its
support of the charter for the new Golden Isles Career Academy. Created through
a partnership of business and industry in cooperation with Glynn County Schools
and Coastal Georgia Community College, the Career Academy will offer a curriculum
developed to meet current and future local manufacturers’ specific requirements
as it opens its doors for the 2009-2010 school year.
Incentives
Brunswick and the Golden Isles assists manufacturing firms by offering valuable
services and incentives. The State of Georgia’s generous incentive package
provides resources for a variety of needs including job training and capital
investment requirements. Beginning in 2008, Georgia’s “Single Factor Gross
Receipts” formula will assist industry by substantially reducing the amount of
state income tax for companies that deliver a large portion of their products
and services outside the state. Additional incentives, unique to Glynn County,
have been tailored to manufacturing. For example, the Share the Future Fund
and the Local Revolving Loan Fund have been created to assist new and
relocating industry with expenses ranging from site development costs to
equipment purchase. For more information, call the Brunswick & Glynn County
