Pinova hosts Golden Isles Career Academy Student Industry Tour, Brunswick GeorgiaStudent Industry Tours for Golden Isles Career Academy

As a result of Glynn County’s Manufacturers Round Table, Industry Leaders from across Georgia’s Golden Isles host students from the Golden Isles Career Academy for Industry Tours.

Workforce Concerns

Workforce is a major concern for manufacturers everywhere, not just in south Georgia.  Based on direct feedback from existing industries, around 30% of the current workforce will be retiring within the next five years.  That level of expertise and tenure is not something you can replace over night.

The local industrial community isn’t sitting idly by, they’re taking workforce development into their own hands.  Each semester several industries host students for tours so they can see what modern manufacturing is really like.  Students get to real life examples of what they’re learning in school.

Rick Townsend, CEO of the Golden Isles Career Academy stated “the industry tours allow the students to understand the job opportunities in Glynn County and they also provide “relevance ” to what they have learned in the classroom and lab.”

Making Connections

An unforeseen benefit to the Student Industry Tours is that industry leaders now have a direct line of communication with instructors at the Golden Isles Career Academy.  Technical training programs absolutely have to have real world input on what is and is not relevant.  Industry leaders also really enjoy being able to pick up the phone, call the instructor, and tell them to send their best and brightest for a job opening.

“I really enjoy seeing our local industry leaders interact with the future workforce.  The tours give industry leaders the opportunity to take an hour out of their day and become a mentor for kids that are genuinely interested in their business.  By the time the tours are over you can tell the industry leaders are a little sad to see the kids get back on the bus.”

 – John Scott, BRE Manager with the Brunswick – Glynn County Development Authority
