Glynn County Airport staff with a Blue Angel

Blue Angels Come to Brunswick Georgia for the Wings Over the Golden Isles Airshow

Blue Angels are flying over Brunswick and the Golden Isles of Georgia in the Wings Over the Golden Isles Air Show and the excitement is in the air.

Long History in Aviation

Mel Baxter, President of the Brunswick-Glynn County Development Authority said “everyone here in Glynn County is really excited about seeing the Blue Angels perform.  Aviation is at the heart and soul of our community and the Wings Over the Golden Isles Air Show is almost like we’re celebrating what who and what we are.”

Blimps patrol for German U-Boats in Brunswick Georgia

The air show is going to be held at the Brunswick-Golden Isles Airport (BQK) which is quite fitting since the airport was constructed by the U.S. Navy.  During World War II, the Brunswick-Golden Isles Airport was a base of operations for hunting German U-Boats.  Liberty Ships, the vessels that were used to bring supplies to the Allies during WWII, were constructed in Brunswick, Georgia.  German U-Boats would track progress of the ships and once they were complete and fully loaded with supplies, they would sink them.

Military and civilian pilots would take off from St Simons Island and patrol the waters off the Atlantic Coast.  Blimps would launch from Glynco Naval Air Station to monitor for U-Boats.  Glynco Naval Air Station has since been repurposed into the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) and the airport is owned by Glynn County and is home to such companies as Gulfstream Aerospace and Stambaugh Aviation.
